Welcome to Romance Author - Nola Cross

I’m delighted to welcome Nola Cross to the blog.

Nola Cross

Hello Nola, It was great to connect with you through our romance publisher, BeachwalkPress Inc. where a wide range of quality ebooks in a variety of subgenres and heat levels are offered.
But before we learn more about your #Amazon Best Seller - Sunny’s Second Chance, here are a few questions which will hopefully give your readers and followers in insight into some of the things that matter to you.

Arabella: Are there any organisations, writing, or reader groups, you belong to? And, how do they support or help you in creating such wonderful, inspirational novels?
Nola: I belong to Romance Writers of America, both the national organization and the Golden Network, which is a chapter for Golden Heart finalists. Right now the national organization is going through an upheaval; I’m not sure I’ll stay a member. But that would mean giving up membership in the Golden Network, which I treasure. So I’ll wait and see.

Arabella: Where do you read? Sofa or bed or ____?
Nola: I have a comfy couch in my office where I write, read, and frequently take naps with my cat, Maggie.

Arabella: In your Christmas holiday themed novel, Sunny’s Second Chance, who is your favourite character and why?
Nola: Sunny’s Second Chance (Beachwalk Press) was released five years ago, but it is still one of my favourite books I’ve written. As to favourite character in the book, it’s a toss up between Sunny and Ben, who are both a little bit broken but still willing to believe in the magic of the holidays and the healing power of love.

Arabella: When writing a novel, how do you work? Are you a plotter or pantser?
Nola: As the years go by I’ve become less of a pantser. The publisher I work with now requires a detailed proposal, so I have to know where my story is going to go before I start writing. But of course there are always surprises as the characters come alive for me.

Arabella: Which would you prefer to do: 1) spend a morning vigorously working out at the gym, 2) be pampered from head to toe at the spa and beauty salon, 3) indulge and pile on the pounds with a romantic dinner for two?
Nola: I’ve got to go with the dinner for two. (Forget the romance—let’s talk about the food.) A big seafood salad, a glass of wine and something chocolate for dessert. Ahhhh.

Seafood Salad

Arabella: Which would you rather wear: beach shorts and top, a long evening skirt and blouse, pyjamas and slippers?
Nola: Hmmm. I live in my jammy bottoms these days but I wear regular shoes with them. What can I say? I’m a fashion maven.

Arabella: We all have a long list of books we keep meaning to read but never have the time for --- which book is a must read for you this season?
Nola: I don’t have titles in my head, but the newest release from RaeAnne Thayne is always at the top of my reading list, and anything by Sarah Addison Allen or Tracy Brogan.

Arabella: What about your future plans? Any books or series in the making?
Nola: I’m just finishing up the first book in a three-book series for Tule Publishing. The Cowboy Comes Undone takes place in Texas Hill Country and features a small town setting, a cattle ranch and working cowboys, which is a first for me. Tule is a new-to-me publisher and I’m hoping we’re starting a long association.

Thanks, Arabella, for inviting me to be a guest on your lovely blog. I’ve enjoyed this fun and thought provoking little quiz. -- Nola

Thank you, Nola. It was lovely having you as a guest on Arabella’s Blog and Chit-Chat.
And I have to say you’ve educated me. I had to look up the word “maven”.
Microsoft Thesaurus word search has declared you to be an: Expert, Connoisseur, Devotee, Pundit, and Enthusiast.
Wishing all the best for your recent release and hoping there’s lots more happy-ever-after writing to come.
Arabella Sheen

About Nola Cross

Nola Cross

Nola began writing before she even started school and won her first writing contest at the age of nine. It’s always been her dream to be an author. She’s a two-time Golden Heart finalist and several of her stories have been Amazon best sellers. For awhile she penned erotic fiction under a pseudonym. Although it was fun to explore her “darker side”, she is now answering the true call of her heart: to write bigger stories that focus on emotion, loss, spirit, and true love, stories she hopes her readers will relate to and want to read more than once. Small town America is her favorite fictional setting.
Nola lives in a comfortable old fixer-upper in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, in southwest Washington state. Two fine cats and a collie dog act as her muses. And seven years ago the family welcomed their first grandchild, darling Ona Mae.
Nola loves to connect with her readers, authors and other friendly folks. Feel free to email her or friend her on Facebook.

A Bride for Lord Redfield by Arabella Sheen - EXCERPT 3

A Bride for Lord Redfield

by

Arabella Sheen

A risqué regency romp enjoyed by both servants and masters as love and passion is discovered―above and below stairs―in his lordship’s household.

Chapter 1 - Emily
EXCERPT 3

Redfield House was an old stone building of good proportions. And for a town house, compared to some places in Tunbridge Wells, it was well-situated and within easy walking distance of amenities. Lord Redfield was fortunate enough to have stables close by in the mews. The local church, which Lady Redfield attended most Sundays, was also within striking distance.
Lifting the long skirts of her dress and climbing the servants’ stairs at the back of the house, Emily stopped halfway on the landing. Looking out of the window, she could see down into the garden. It was small in size, laid mostly to lawn, and around the borders a few shrubs and bushes had been planted. Hidden behind the tall, box hedge was a pathway that led to a gate in the wall. The servants tended to use this entrance when coming and going, and from where Emily stood, she had a clear view over the hedge and could see Ruby approaching. Ruby had a spring in her step. Swinging the basket she was carrying, she disappeared from sight, entering the building through the kitchen door.
“What are you doing loitering here, girl? Get a move on.”
“Yes, Mrs. Clements. The bedchambers at the front of the house are ready for Mrs. Whitaker and Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood to use. I’m now on my way to make up Miss Rosalinda’s bed. I was airing her sheets in the linen cupboard again to make certain they were dry. Lady Redfield gave strict instructions and was very particular. She said everything had to be perfect for Miss Rosalinda’s room. And I was even told to put pink roses in there and not white ones.”
Mrs. Clements tilted her nose high. “I believe pink is Miss Rosalinda’s favorite color. But stop chattering, Emily. You have work to do. Go and make the bed. And make sure the window is closed and the chamber pot is beneath the four-poster.”
“Yes, Mrs. Clements.” Emily curtsied and moved off.
Reaching the bedchamber, she set about dusting the furniture and making the bed up in readiness.
A soft mattress and fresh linen was always nice, and it was a luxury Emily had yet to experience. The beds in the servants’ quarters were hard and prickly. A mattress stuffed with horse hair was anything but soft, and a change of sheets…well, that didn’t happen very often. She rarely had time to finish her chores, let alone look after her own needs. At night, exhausted from her duties, more often than not she just felt thankful for a place to rest her head and sleep.
Struggling to put the pillows inside their cases, Emily eventually managed the task and then started straightening the sheets and placing the blankets on the four-poster bed.
She thought that one blanket and the padded patchwork quilt ought to be enough. The weather was warm, and Miss Rosalinda could always find an extra blanket in the linen chest at the foot of the bed if she needed to.
Emily was tucking the last corner of the quilt into place when she heard a light tap on the door. She had left the door ajar. A head peered around the opening, and in an instant she saw that it was Robert.
“What are you doing up here?” she whispered. “You ought to be downstairs helping Mr. Henderson get the music room ready for tonight.”
The music room, quite large in size, was to be stripped of furniture and rugs, leaving only two chaise-longues and the barest amount of chairs around the edges of the room for people to sit on. The musicians, a violist and cellist from Pembury, were to be placed near the window, giving ample room for the guests to dance―if they so wished.
“We have unfinished business,” Robert said with a grin. And stepping further into the room, he closed the door behind him.
“You can’t. We can’t.” She laughed excitedly. “You shouldn’t be here. If Mr. Henderson were to catch you, you’d lose your job. We’d lose our jobs.”
“Then we will just have to make sure he doesn’t catch us, won’t we? Anyway, he thinks I’m still buying candles from the candle maker and charging them to Lord Redfield’s account. He’s afraid we’ll run out of them tonight and he’ll have to send me off to get some more. I told him it would take me at least half an hour, and old Henderson seemed happy with that.”
“Then you ought to go and buy them, not stand here talking to me.”
“I’ve already bought them. I left them downstairs near the pantry.”
“But won’t Mr. Henderson want you to do other things? He’ll want the silver polished and―”
“I doubt I’ll be missed,” Robert said with confidence. “Henderson’s got too much to keep him busy to notice I’m not back.”
“But that does not mean―”
“Emily…shut up and give me a kiss. It’s the least you can do after all the trouble I’ve been through to see you.”
Robert pulled her close to him. Emily could feel his warm breath catch against her cheek, and when his lips found hers, she didn’t resist. She couldn’t. She snuggled into him, and her senses were stirred. If truth be told, she’d always wanted him as much as he wanted her, only she dared not show her true feelings…until now.
She’d always had her eye on Robert. From the first moment she’d seen him, when he was standing at attention in the hall, waiting to open the library door for Lord Redfield, he had made an impression on her. She was sure he was destined for the finer things in life, and she wondered if she could become part of his journey. Servants weren’t supposed to see one another―not in that way. And to marry was practically unheard of. But that didn’t stop her wishing for bigger and better things―with Robert.
Robert’s hands reached for her breasts.
The low-cut neckline of her dress exposed an ample amount of cleavage, and when he squeezed, lifting her breasts upward toward him, his face came down to the deep crevice between her mounds. His lips kissed and his tongue lapped at any exposed skin he could find, and his touch, although rough, was pleasingly satisfying.
Beneath her clothing, Emily could feel her nipples swell and tighten. Cradling his head in her hands, she pulled him into her, burying his face still deeper between her breasts.
She inhaled his musky scent, and her senses were spinning.
Blindly, Robert pushed her back toward the newly made bed, and when the back of her legs touched the mattress, she buckled, falling down heavily onto the padded quilt. In an instant, he was on top of her, pressing her down into the soft bedding with his weight. And when his fingers slipped hurriedly beneath the neckline of her dress, it was so they could tug on the strings of her chemise and free her breasts.

Welcome to Romance Author - Kaylie Newell

I’m delighted to welcome Kaylie Newell to my blog.

Hello Kaylie – It was great to connect through our mutual romance publisher, Beachwalk Press although today, I believe you have chosen to feature your latest release, a TulePublishing Group book, Christmas at Sleigh Bell Farm.
We are all eager to get to learn a little bit more about you and your writing, so here are a few questions which will hopefully give your readers and followers an insight into some of the things that matter to you.

Arabella: Authors can release books, making them available to readers in various ways…via an agent, or working directly with a traditional publisher, or they can even go the self-publishing route. Which method of publishing do you prefer, and why?
Kaylie: I have huge respect for indie authors, because not only do they have to write the books, but they also have to take care of the business side of publishing, which is a lot.  The learning curve is significant, and I’ve always known that for me, I’m better at writing the stories, and handing everything else over to my publisher.  I’d rather write than deal with the formatting, marketing, etc.  But I know a lot of authors who balance it all very well.  It’s just a personal preference.

Arabella: A slice of Chocolate Cake, a piece of Fruit, or Burger and Fries?
Kaylie: A slice of chocolate cake! 100% ;)

Arabella: Who or what inspired you to write your latest release, Christmas at Sleigh Bell Farm?
Kaylie: I’m a huge fan of Hallmark Christmas movies, so I’d say those were my biggest inspiration.  It’s my hope that people who read Christmas at Sleigh Bell Farm might see it playing out like a Hallmark movie in their head.  I just love the warm feeling Christmas movies leave you with.

Arabella: If the person of your dreams, (husband/wife/partner/or superstar), were to take you out for the night, where would they take you and what would you do?
Kaylie: They’d take me to a Stephen King reading.  Hands down!  He’s my favorite author of all-time, and I’d love to see him in person someday. And then we’d have to go for dessert afterwards.  Chocolate cake, of course!

Arabella: Currently, what is your most favourite T.V. programme, and why?
Kaylie: I’m re-watching The Golden Girls.  I have a real soft spot for nostalgic 80’s sitcoms that take me back to my childhood.  Wings is next, followed by Designing Women, and I Love Lucy (that one was a little before my time, but I grew up watching it anyway.  My oldest daughter is named after Lucille Ball).

Lucille Ball

Arabella: When writing a book or chapter, which do you concentrate on first: plot, character, or setting?
Kaylie: I’d have to say setting.  I love world building- it’s the most fun for me.  After I get a feel for the world, everything else tends to fall into place.

Arabella: How do you research your novels and characters?
Kaylie: I do a lot of Googling (and when researching sexy heroes, that’s not a tough job).  YouTube really helped with my latest book- my hero runs an animal sanctuary, and has a sick donkey on his hands.  I had to watch several videos about how to tube feed donkeys.

Arabella: What advice would you give to someone who is starting out on their writing journey?
Kaylie: I think the best advice I can give is to write most every day, but in realistic chunks.  300 words is the goal I started with, and it grew from there.  It’s a manageable amount- I’d say most people could get that in under 30 minutes.  But if you do it most every day, you’ll have a book before you know it!  Also, don’t underestimate the power of a good contest.  I love contests, and can credit them with taking me to the next level in my writing career.

Thank you for joining me on Arabella's Blog and Chit-Chat, Kaylie. I was fascinated to learn about your YouTube research and the feeding tube. In your shoes, I think I would have been tempted to change the plot.
Good luck with your novel Christmas at Sleigh Bell Farm and keep the words flowing.
All the best, and wishing you lots more happy-ever-after writing.
Arabella Sheen

A Bride for Lord Redfield by Arabella Sheen - EXCERPT 2

A Bride for Lord Redfield

by

Arabella Sheen

A risqué regency romp enjoyed by both servants and masters as love and passion is discovered―above and below stairs―in his lordship’s household.

Chapter 1 – Emily
EXCERPT 2

Robert was handsome, tall, and shapely. And dressed in his uniform, he looked strikingly masculine. But until now, he had never really had the opportunity to approach her. Not like this. And she had purposefully kept him at a distance.
Of course, he had made advances. He had teased and flirted like all the footmen did, but he had never actually achieved anything except the occasional stolen kiss.
In the cellar or laundry room when no one was looking, he had cornered her and tried his luck, but she had always managed to fob him off and keep him at bay…until now. It appeared things were coming to a head, and she sensed he was beginning to want more than she was willing to give at present.
Girls in her position had to be careful. She couldn’t afford to lose her job. And any liaison―innocent or not―with another servant would be noticed and frowned upon.
“Are you going to let me take you to the traveling fair this weekend?” he asked. “Or are you going to watch the jesters and puppet shows with Cliff? I’ve seen the way he looks at you, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he hasn’t already―”
“Don’t you dare, Robert Manson. Don’t you dare think something like that has happened between Cliff and me.”
Cliff was the stable hand who looked after Lord Redfield’s carriages and horses. Nothing had happened between her and Cliff, and even if something had, that was no concern of Robert’s. Was it?
“Then give me a kiss to prove there’s nothing between you and Cliff,” he said with a grin. “And I mean a real kiss. You’re pretty enough to have all of us running around after you. You might look prim and proper with your fair curls covered beneath your lace cap and your shapely figure concealed under your dress, but you aren’t really prim and proper, are you?”
Without Emily realizing what was happening, Robert had captured both her hands in his. He was forcing them, twisting them behind her back until he was able to grasp them tightly in one hand. They were face to face. Torso to torso. And beneath her clothes, she could feel the hardness of his awakening manhood pressing against her thigh.
An ache was beginning to grow between her legs, and warmth spread throughout her. Robert always had the ability to set her pulses racing, and that was the case now.
With his free hand, he took hold of her face. Then, with the demanding firmness of his mouth, he once again lunged, ravishing her lips with his.
“Stop it, Robert,” she gasped breathless.
“Stop what?” he said between kisses.
She laughed cheekily. “You know what I mean.”
His kisses were deepening, becoming urgent. His tongue traced the outline of her lips, and he slowly pried them open before penetrating her mouth.
Emily could feel him, smell him, and taste him. And although she wanted to give in to her desire, she had to resist.
Robert released her hands, and somehow, of their own accord, they were now around his neck, pulling him down toward her. She was kissing him back. She couldn’t resist…her desire was ignited, and it was equal to his.
Pushing aside the neckline of her dress, he reached for the drawstrings on her chemise. He began playing with them, pulling on the ties, and as he tugged them loose, a glimpse of her breasts was revealed to him.
“You want me, Emily. I know you do.”
“I can’t. We can’t. Not now, Robert. I have things to do. Rooms to prepare. Lord Redfield will have a house full of guests this weekend, and nothing is in readiness. It’s going to be chaos if I don’t prepare the bedchambers.”
“And it’s going to be chaos if you do, especially in Mrs. Greenwood’s bedchamber,” said Robert with a laugh.
“What do you mean? What do you know?” Emily asked, curious.
Did Robert know something she didn’t?
“If you make it worth my while, I might tell you,” he said with a bold smile and a wink.
Emily’s heart skipped a beat. Not because of Robert’s veiled promise of lovemaking, but because over Robert’s shoulder, she could see the door to the breakfast room was being opened. Someone was about to enter.
Quickly, she turned away to conceal her flushed face and exposed cleavage from view. Then surreptitiously, sliding to one side, she stood in front of the service lift, pretending to be busy.
“Is there a problem?” said a low voice.
“Mr. Henderson, sir. I was just helping Emily finish up here.” Robert was taking the brunt of Mr. Henderson’s censorious glare. “Her ladyship is in the morning room, and she asked me to collect her shawl.”
Walking over to the chair, Robert retrieved the forgotten silk wrap.
Luckily for Emily, Robert had given her just enough time to covertly straighten her garments before turning back into the room.
“I’m nearly done here, Mr. Henderson,” she said, and gave her ruffled lace cap one last jiggle before tucking a few stray hairs neatly back into place. “And if Mrs. Clements doesn’t need me for anything urgent, I’d best get on and get the bedchambers ready for his lordship’s guests.”
“Then see to it,” said Mr. Henderson. “And be smart about it. The guests will be arriving anytime now, and they will want to unpack and rest before this evening’s entertainment begins.”
Emily knew only too well that tonight was going to be busy―for everyone.
About a week ago, a meeting had been held in the staff dining room below stairs. Mr. Henderson had called everyone together and explained that while at the town house, Lord Redfield intended to give a ball for his friends. But it was only when Mr. Stephens, Lord Redfield’s secretary, provided housekeeping with a list of guests and the rooms her ladyship wished to have made ready, that everyone, including the gardener, knew something big was happening.
The names on the list pointed to only one thing, and that was that Lord Redfield was about to propose marriage to Miss Rosalinda Mills.
It was known throughout the servants’ hall that the master had recently packed an overnight portmanteau and had driven his phaeton and grays to Lippon. According to Bishop, the head groom, who had accompanied the master on the journey, they had stabled the team at The King’s Arms and his lordship, having obtained lodging at the inn for the night, had then gone on to call upon his aunt, Lady Whitaker.
That act alone, according to speculation in the servants’ hall, could mean only one thing. His lordship had gone to Lippon to seek the hand in marriage of Miss Rosalinda.
His lordship’s aunt, Lady Whitaker, was Miss Rosalinda’s godmother. And as Miss Rosalinda had lost her parents at an early age and was raised by Lady Whitaker in Sir Whitaker’s household, it was assumed Lord Redfield had approached his aunt for consent to marry her goddaughter.
Of course, all this was conjecture, but Emily, sure that all would be proven true this afternoon when the guests arrived, was full of excitement.
After Mr. Henderson and Robert left the breakfast room, and when everything had been brought to order, Emily made her way upstairs to prepare the bedchambers for the visitors.
